Sharon Van Etten

Sharon Van Etten

Jared Kelly

Sharon Van Etten is a singer-songwriter who works mostly within that broad space spanning between indie folk and indie rock. Her first album was grounded more in the acoustic folk style, but then she began to open her sound up to more electric and rhythmic elements. She has been growing as a songwriter in each album, producing more sophisticated arrangements and exploring different flavors of folk and rock. Her songs have progressively been tending towards a mixture of low tempo emotional slow burns and mid to high tempo passion fests. This trajectory continued on 2019's Remind Me Tomorrow, as she took a turn to a heavier sound while on 2022's post pandemic We've Been Going About This All Wrong, she switched to a darker, more somber note that delves into a sense of sadness and isolation.

The Grey Eagle

In a city known for its music scene, The Grey Eagle is an institution. With a capacity about half that of The Orange Peel, but covering mainly the same range of genres, it tends to host either national acts with narrower appeal or popular regional artists. The Eagle is also more likely to host Bluegrass or Jazz artists than other local venues. It is a charming place, with lots of character and a taqueria with seating on the premises. It also has a rather large outdoor courtyard/patio area that is a perfect place to eat your tacos, get some fresh air or have a smoke. More informal, intimate performances are also performed on the patio. Most performances in the music hall are largely standing room only, with a few chairs along the walls, but many performances offer VIP tickets that include seating in a roped off area at the back of the dancefloor. The large bar is, unfortunately, staffed by a single bartender. Almost all performances are all ages.

End of an Ear

End of an Ear

Steve W.

End of an Ear is a good size record store in South Austin with an excellent mixture of mainstream and non-mainstream music. They have new releases as well as a very well-curated set of older ones, vintage records, etc. The store likes to separate subgenres a little, including separate sections for 80s post-punk, psychedelic, world music, etc. Their collection includes a good amount of experimental music one may not see in many other stores. They have a clear emphasis on local artists and their work. The store carries quite a few rows of CDs, but their main focus is very clearly on records. They also sell turntables and other music-related equipment.
