Baxter Dury
Outline
Though he likes to call himself a "very budget nepo baby", Baxter Dury is post-punk royalty. From his gruff voice and delivery style to the way he moves between speak-singing and spoken words in his proud cockney, he is very much in line with his father, Ian Dury. His ability to forge a punk-centric and dance-curious style and knack for hooks and melodies, as well as his humor and storytelling also strike a similar chord. He came to his own gradually over a decade or so, roughly between 2014's It's a Pleasure and 2017's Prince of Tears, as he started to lean harder into a sound inspired by a mixture of new wave, disco and synth pop, turned up his signature deadpan, and added lush female backing vocals to bounce off of (see Johnny Dowd for a similar approach).
Ian Dury & the Blockheads, for sure. But also Sleaford Mods, Automatic, Dry Cleaning, and Kae Tempest for that poetic quality.
His father is the post-punk legend Ian Dury of Ian Dury & The Blockheads.
