Automatic is a Los Angeles based trio that plays synth driven music that combines '80s style uptempo new wave with somewhat groovy and nimble post-punk. They strike a balance between the former's cheery pop and the latter's gloomy outlook. Halle Saxon-Gaines' bass pretty much sets the tone for the band, as she propels the songs forward, backed by Lola Dompé's sturdy beats. The synth work is provided by Izzy Glaudini, whether she is driving the main melody or just adding ornamental parts. Their music is relatively subdued and the band maintains a solid sense of rigor, especially in the beats. Glaudini and Dompé both contribute to the vocals often in a disaffected, aloof tone. Lyrically, on the other hand, there are enough dystopic sci-fi future themes in their songs to geek out about.
