Kae Tempest

Kae Tempest (formerly Kate Tempest) is a remarkable artist whose work is firmly grounded in literary arts. He is a poet, playwright, and novelist in addition to being a singer-songwriter. His earlier work (as Kate) walks a fine line between speak-singing, spoken word, and rapping, all performed with great emotional nuance and accompanied by a carefuly lproduced musical backdrop that has its own push and pull between a mixture of indie rock and post-punk with powerful primal beats and quieter indietronica textures. His post-transition album Self-Titled (2025) marks a subtle shift on his content and presentation (other than the obvious voice change): His songs are more self-reflective, his delivery more closely aligned with a rapping cadence, and the music, much sharper and punchy with stronger hip-hop accents. What has not changed a bit is his natural bravado and compelling presence as a vocal performer.
