Young Jesus
Outline
Young Jesus is an indie band led by singer-songwriter John Rossiter. Their latest release, Shepherd Head (2023), however, was essentially a Rossiter solo project that was also quite a norm-breaking, genre-bending album exploring an idiosyncratic sound that sits between electronic and post-rock with only a tangential connection to indie rock. It happens to continue the trajectory of the band with their experimental tendencies, unconventional approach to song structures, and the use of improvisation. By contrast, their earlier phase, which goes back to their beginnings in Chicago under a different line-up, was defined by a more pop-oriented, upbeat, and lively style that followed a more conventional format, with a bouncy melodic style that has often been compared to bands like The Hold Steady.
