Bartees Strange is a singer/songwriter based in Washington, DC, who plays indie rock with an ear keenly in tune with a variety of other genres, including hip-hop, alternative R&B and synth pop, as well as indie folk that is immersed in Bon Iver type soundscapes. All this mix and match he invokes comes across as genuine and organic, signs of an artist following where the song takes them rather than pursuing programmatic ideas. This results in music with many different facets, and multiple ideas constantly competing with one another, which also provides a lot of breadth to his vision that comes directly from his consistent genre-crossing. His first EP, Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, was a reimagining of five of the songs from The National's catalog.
