Oceanator is both the moniker for singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Elise Okusami and the name of the band that she plays with. Her music is closely tied to the classic grunge style in many ways even though it may not always sound like that. Part of this has to do with the way her songs have prominent pop tones with a light, melodic touch and do not wrap themselves inside layers of angst. She also does not strictly confine herself to grunge either. Especially her early work often went back and forth between straight up indie rock with an upbeat, pop feel and acoustic ballads that lean on the somber side. Okusami often plays multiple instruments on her recordings, including the bass and the drums. She is quite deft and versatile on the guitar, regularly switching it up between melodic leads and a harsher sound reserved for her solos.
