Young Fathers is an Edinburgh based alternative hip-hop/R&B band that consists of three singers who also handle the production, keyboards, and some of the percussion between them. They use a drummer on live shows as well. Their music works off of a hip-hop template that is baked in a mold of big beats and big phrases, then adds some synth pop, alternative R&B, and just enough post-punk into it, as well as some punk and krautrock influences to keep things interesting. Their earlier work, i.e., their initial mixtapes and their first album, Dead (2014), were more heavily hip-hop centered and sported a lot of electronic dance grooves. Their music became more layered in subsequent albums as they expanded into pop, rock, and other adjacent genres. There is a melodic core to their songs, but it becomes almost incidental as they continue to tinker with the texture, which is the component that stands out the most in their songs.
