Darius Jones

Composer, bandleader, and Jazz saxophonist Darius Jones plays a form of jazz that has an interesting collection of stylistic forces pulling from different directions. There is a thread of post-bop in his music that nicely grounds his work and provides the rubber band that snaps him back after he has veered off into adjacent spaces (sometimes in the very same piece). He is, after all, just as likely to hit the experimental ground by moving in an improvisational and strongly avant-garde jazz sound as he is to take a chamber music adjacent path and end up in a more classical friendly tone. The way he likes to move through that stylistic tension makes for a fascinating (and deeply introspective) listening experience.
