Sugar Candy Mountain is the Oakland based guitar/drums duo Ash Reiter and Will Halsey, whose music is a rich buffet of '60s music including psychedelic pop, tropicalia, and sunny California beach pop with all the misty, hazy, woozy sound that goes with it. They deliver delightfully upbeat and often uptempo music that breezes along with confidence and joy. They construct strong grooves and their instrumentation often has vintage accents, especially between the bass and the occasional keyboard lines that show up. Their earlier albums leaned more towards the retro feel, which reached its current balance around 2016's 666. Reiter takes the lead on the vocals as she sings with a sweet and slightly breathy voice, that brings out an understated dreamy element to their music as well.
Halsey played drums with Matt Adams' band The Blank Tapes.
We cannot do better than what the band says: "If Brian Wilson had dropped acid on the beach in Brazil and decided to record an album with Os Mutantes and The Flaming Lips, it would sound like this- all psychedelic pop Wall-of Sound and beach balladry"
