Thundercat

Thundercat

Thundercat is bass player, singer, songwriter Stephen Lee Bruner, who works mostly in jazz, but also plays in other genres, such as funk, R&B, and hip-hop. He is a much renowned and highly sought after musician as a bass player because his level of technical proficiency is roughly in the same ballpark as some of the great players of previous generations, like Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller. His best known collaboration may be with Kendrick Lamar, but he has also had some long term and productive partnerships with Kamasi Washington and Flying Lotus as a part of LA's jazz scene. He sings in a style that is more in tune with the R&B tradition, which creates a nice contrast with his very jazz and funk driven intricate bass lines. He is clearly one of the leading figures of R&B/jazz fusion in contemporary music. His songs are not overly melodic, but have enough of a flow to give his instrumental work a pop-adjacent flow.

Hollywood Palladium is one of the classic Art Deco style large venues in the city of Los Angeles, situated on the Sunset Boulevard in the Hollywood district. It was built in 1940 as a ballroom, which helps explain the hardwood floor in the middle of the large oval structure. There is a second floor that oversees the stage with tables, which is the VIP areas. Regular folks enjoy the show at the ground level on the said hardwood surface. It has plenty of bars on all sides of the building, enough for the large crowds it usually attracts. By its very nature Hollywood Palladium brings in relatively well-established acts that draw a bit audience, perhaps a couple of steps before an act reaches the stadium level.

Third Eye Records

Third Eye Records

Third Eye Record is a record store in the Retro Row area of Long Beach, California. It opened in 2002 as relatively small shop, and did not grow much in size since then, having set its focus tightly on the variety and the quality of the records it carries. They typically do not have duplicates of the same record (except on Record Store Day, obviously), and what they have is a very high concentration of gems and hard to find albums, especially as used records, which are invariably in good condition. Those that are not are in a separate bin towards the back of the store. There are very few CDs or other media in the store.
