Big Something

Big Something

Michael Oswald

Big Something is a six-piece band from North Carolina that plays rock music mostly along conventional lines but with a strong emphasis on jamming. They have a solid rhythm section, including a deliciously funky bass, two guitars, a keyboard and a saxophone, and a whole lot of passion that colors their improvisation and the grooves they maintain. With songs that range from pop pieces to guitar-driven old school shredders, their music is far from monolithic. It is also consistently strong, melodically. Their studio recordings have become somewhat more structured over the years, and their sound, tighter, but the band continues to fully engage the material and bring a lot of ideas to the table, and spend time exploring them. The songs naturally tend to be longer than the usual 3-minute radio standard, but time kinda flies when they get going.

Moroccan Lounge

Moroccan Lounge

Moroccan Lounge is a venue built on a spot that has been various other bars in the past, renovated and opened in 2017 as a combination restaurant-bar and music venue for hip-hop and indie acts.  It is owned by the same folks who also turned the Playhouse Theater into Teragram Ballroom. It is one of the smaller venues in the Los Angeles area, and naturally attracts a smaller and dedicated group of fans. The music room is off to the side and is accessible through the bar area, and it is an intimate rectangular space with the stage at the one end. The Lounge is located in the area that is squeezed between Little Tokyo and the Los Angeles River, close to the 101 freeway.
