The Wants

The Wants are a post-punk trio that shares some DNA with Brooklyn's own Bodega, as well as members who played in both bands at some point. They operate in different grooves stylistically, though: while Bodega's manic energy tends to bounce off the walls, The Wants lean towards a more buttoned down, tighter sound that can get funky and slinky in feel. There is a clear dark edge to their tone, with songs that can be quite brooding at times, and tense. They like to mix things up in their textures, reaching into elements of electronic, industrial, and trip-hop to infuse incidental flavors into their songs. Madison Velding-VanDam, who leads the band, has a commanding voice that brings an additional weight to his delivery of often heavy lyrics.
