Roskilde Festival is a long-standing, 4-day music festival that takes place just south of the Danish city of Roskilde. It began in 1971 as a hippie festival inspired by countercultural music festivals in the US and UK and has managed to not only maintain relevance but grow to one of the largest music festivals in Europe, attracting around 130,000 attendees in recent years.
In 2000, during a Pearl Jam performance with an audience of around 50,000, crowd movement and muddy conditions resulted in a crush that killed 9 and injured another 26. New safety measures were subsequently introduced and there have been no such incidents since.
Roskilde Festival boasts over 200 performers spanning all popular genres, both internationally known and regional favorites.
