The Orielles
Outline
The Orielles are a band that went through a significant transformation during the pandemic years. They made upbeat, uptempo indie pop music that walked the line between dream pop and dance music, with strong melodies and some jangle before 2020. Then the isolation came. When the band emerged in 2022 with Tableau, not only had their tone gotten more subdued, but apparently they had also tossed out their indie pop blueprints, spun some interesting records, and discovered the joys of an improvisational and experimental approach to songwriting. Their music dives head first into the wonderful world of post-rock and jazz with perhaps a side of krautrock and some Stereolab and Broadcast thrown in the mix. They are still dance friendly (at times) and continue to crank out sweet melodies, though neither is the main point of their music at the moment. They seem more focused on exploring textures, constructing beats, and giving us more to geek out on.
