The Fearless Flyers are not a typical band in the sense that it started out as an experiment by Vulfpeck's Jack Stratton, who wanted to see what would happen if a band was to be built around three guitars: a regular one, a baritone guitar, and a bass. He pulled in his fellow Vulfpeck members Joe Dart (bass) and Cory Wong (guitar), added Snark Puppy's Mark Lettieri to the line-up, turned to drummer extraordinaire Nate Smith to round out the band, and then moved himself to the producer's chair. The result is exactly what one would imagine: music that is filled to the brim with funky energy and metronomic precision. They do not have vocals in their songs, though they more than make up for that with brass and reed instruments as guests. They mix covers with originals, and occasionally reach into old school rock 'n roll and blues for added fun, but funk remains the king even in those tracks.
