Madeline Kenney is an indie rock artist based in Oakland, California, who uses a lot of the dream pop idioms with all the characteristic chimy guitars combined with subdued drums and bass, but without having completely settled in that particular lane. She has song dynamics and gear shifts in her songs and a level of clarity in her singing that are not typical of dream pop. She sings in a fairly soft and friendly voice that is grounded in the here and the now as opposed to something ethereal. Her melodies are unmuddled, mostly calm and relaxed, and with a subtle trip-hop and/or soft electronic feel her grooves sometimes. Her first album had some subtle post-punk nods in terms of its rhythmic variations and sonic explorations that she still seems to be revisiting occasionally.
