Tomato Flower is a Baltimore based indie band with an experimental streak that has a sharp, angular sound from an art pop meets math rock angle and a hazy, dream pop style vocals and melodic textures. They started out with a much softer sound on their initial set of EPs, where they traded woozy floaters with upbeat and slightly sunny pop tunes. With their 2024 debut album, No, the band moved in a darker direction and adopted more abrupt tonal shifts and a fuzzier approach, which ended up expanding their toolbox in some sense. That said, there is enough airiness, jazzy feel, and a level of cool detachment along the lines of French yé-yé in their music that helps balance the scales, with hints of Stereolab and Vanishing Twin sprinkled here and there.
