Wombo is an experimental outfit based in Louisville, Kentucky whose music uses a lot of elements from post-punk and no wave, but resists stylistic pigeonholing. It is not that their music cuts across genre definitions, but the band members apparently have an appetite for different musical idioms and are happy to try things. They embrace grungy indie rock, bossa nova, lovely jazz chords, or psychedelic jam band material before they take a turn towards a sound that is vintage Curved Air before it dissolves into 60s French pop. No biggie. The beauty of it is the way the band tweaks these idioms in just the right way that ends up defining the Wombo sound anyway. Even when they are not genre-hopping, the choices they make in the melodic flow and their arrangements are consistently off the beaten path.
