Palm
Outline
Palm is an indie rock band from Philadelphia whose calling card is unpredictable turns, fractured musical passages, and living at the edge of dissonance. Their songs feel like they are put together as juxtaposed snippets in a collage. The outcome is quite artsy and engaging, however, for a listener trying to process the music. Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt's guitars trade lines in their jangly and jagged discord, while their vocals harmonies sometimes tap smoothly into Beach Boys stream. With all the changes in time signatures, the precision in their execution, and complex melodies the band earns the math-rock label they are often assigned. That said, in the context of their sonic experimentation, the math part going on in their work actually appears to be a more stylistic framework to express some bold ideas about music as well.
Advance cautiously if you are vertigo-prone.
