Buke and Gase is an experimental indie rock duo whose music is known for their sharp angular edges, odd beats, and sudden shifts. Their name comes from their self-built instruments, which give them an unusual sound profile as their starting point. Buke is a baritone ukelele, and gase is a guitar/bass hybrid. They also play various percussive instruments with their feet. Their song construction can be jarring at first with the changes in direction and the way they sometimes contain a series melodic snippets that are stitched together. All this helps create a complex but gripping texture. Singer Arone Dyer plays off of this fractured dynamic with a voice that carries echoes of Kristin Hersh. The duo has expanded their musical vocabulary and range to also include electronics on their third album, Scholars.
Sanchez was a member of Proton Proton. Dyer and Sanchez Were in the band Hominid prior to forming Buke and Gase. They were originally called "Buke and Gass" until they changed their spelling to "Buke and Gase".
Cerebral without the math, experimental without the screeches, prog without the meandering and the preciousness.
