Surf Curse is the guitar/drums duo Jacob Rubeck and Nick Rattigan, respectively, whose music has grown from its plain lo-fi surf punk roots towards a post-punk edge, before they took a turn towards old school garage rock. Their earlier work was characterized by scrappy, DIY type songs with a chugging guitar and a straight indie type vocal delivery. As the band matured, Rubeck's guitar acquired a more chiming quality and Rattigan's vocals became more emotionally expressive. From all that, a freer melodic flow followed, as well as a richer, more textured sound as the band came to adopt a tone similar to bands like The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees circa early to mid '80s. On their 2022 album, Magic Hour, the band expanded its line up to four, and began to shift towards a rougher more basic rock sound.
