Soft Bait is post-punk band that gravitates towards the darker regions of the genre with goth undertones. They have a tendency to give their songs a relatively harsh surface but they actually play with a lot of restraint that allows them to build towards big bursts with cranked up distortion. The guitars are often sharp and jagged while the beats are punchy and strong. Vocalist Josh Hunter brings an interesting texture that combines the resonance of Ian Curtis (of Joy Division) with a slight Stan Ridgway (of Wall of Voodoo) type edge. Their song dynamics are well-calibrated with well-timed and effective ups and downs. They have good melodic instincts and construct clear musical narratives.
