Phantogram is an electronic pop duo originally from Saratoga Springs, NY, known for their big swirling melodies, layered synths, and the highly nuanced vocals by the singer Sarah Bartell, who has a highly expressive voice that occasionally comes in waves the same way Elizabeth Fraser (of Cocteau Twins) used to modulate her voice. Underneath the electronic instrumentation, a lot of their songs tend to be ballads and tunes that would work as indie tunes. Their starting point was more on the trip-hop side of the scale, more upbeat and dance oriented than cool, but playing in that particular niche helped them explore layering and textures in their music. They turned towards the synth pop side on their third album, Three, and adopted a much bigger and bolder sound, which they fortified in their subsequent album.
