mary in the junkyard

mary in the junkyard (all lowercase) is an off kilter indie rock trio that incorporates some of the atmospheric and hazy elements of dream pop into their sound while keeping an idiosyncratic rock sound underneath the blurry surface. Their music has a strong emotional core, where every song seems to land somewhere on the melancholy scale. A lot of that is tied to vocalist Clari Freeman-Taylor's misty voice and forlorn tone, and the band's instrumentation also tacks to the same wind. That said, they also keep an attack mode in their back pockets that they are not afraid to use. Saya Barbaglia's viola adds a whole different dimension to their music when they bring it into the spotlight.
