Horsegirl

Horsegirl is an indie band that currently embraces a jagged and scratchy indie sound with an angular style and off-kilter tones. At least that is what emerged in their sophomore album, 2025's Phonetics On and On. Knowing that the album was produced by Cate Le Bon adds the right context around that sound, to some extent. It was quite a sharp shift away from the combination of noise rock, shoegaze, and post-punk they originally made their name with a few years prior.  As their dark tones built on distorted, sharp guitars and a loud rhythm section gave way to the stripped down, crisper sound, the band was able to clear the space around the sweet and tuneful nature of their melodic lines, delivered by slightly aloof but also intimate vocals.
