Horsegirl is an indie band that effectively distils '90s no wave and shoegaze sound into a mix of artfully handled noise and they make it feel both natural and inevitable. There is a strong Sonic Youth stream that runs through their music as well as the type of cool detachment in their vocals that was mastered by Kim Gordon herself. Their use of shoegaze is mostly a stylistic choice wrt their noise leaning guitar textures and does not go any deeper than that, which is also true for the post-punk elements that seem mostly limited to the rhythms. The band has a knack for blending their influences into a cohesive style that they can call their own. The band's overall music has a raw and ragged side that shows how well they have digested the work of their predecessors.
