Wednesday

Wednesday is a band based in Ashville, North Carolina, led by singer/guitarist Karly Hartzman. They generally work in an indie rock and shoegaze hybrid style that borrows from '90s alt-rock blueprint, especially wrt the loud/soft/loud dynamics that were popular at the time (see Nirvana). While they remain in the same area code during the soft parts, they turn to shoegaze inspired bursts in the loud parts, as opposed to punk. They execute this effectively in the way they build that distorted sonic wall of guitar sound when they take off. The soft parts are also nicely done with that classic '90s feel. The guitars are quite expressive in the way they can flip between moods and styles. Xandy Chelmis' lap guitar, on the other hand, adds a distinct flavor that makes you wonder why more indie rock bands don't do it.
