Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter (and cartoonist) Joanna Sternberg is a throwback artist in a sense. They often find inspiration in the music of the early to mid 20th century whether is ragtime piano, the Great Depression era folk music, or classical chamber music for that matter. There is also a theatrical thread that shows up occasionally in their work. They write songs that tend to be on the heavy side, dealing with loneliness and anxiety more often than not. Their vocal delivery has the mannerisms of someone singing to a sparse audience in a small space with an intimate touch. On the other hand, they also add some intriguing instrumental parts into their songs that find a way to stand out even when they are a little off center.
