Phoebe Bridgers is a singer-songwriter who works roughly in the indie folk style but with an eye towards a more expansive sound. Her songwriting prowess was on display pretty much from the get-go, on album one, track one, and so was her overall mournful, elegiac, and sometimes downright sad tone. That said, she can write achingly beautiful music. Most of her songs have pared down arrangements with acoustic guitar and voice, accompanied by occasional electric guitar or keyboards for subtle texture. Every now and then she adds drums, ups the tempo, introduces dramatic peaks and valleys, but at the end of the day, it is all about those moody and contemplative melodies. She has also had strong collaborative partnerships with a few outstanding artists, such as Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes).
