Julien Baker

Julien Baker is a singer-songwriter working in a style that is close to indie folk in its gestures and fairly independent in execution. Her songs have a level of quiet intensity in the delivery that makes use of tension in the quiet parts but does not necessarily shoot for a release in the dramatic peaks. She works mostly solo with an electric guitar or piano, paired with occasional loops. She incorporated a rhythm section and some subdued indie pop elements into her music in Little Oblivions in 2021, but retained the core of her style, just adding some flow to her music and perhaps a faint whiff of country.  Her songs can be quite understated as far as her melodies are concerned, but they convey a range of melancholic shades, and they are often beautifully written and memorable. Her lyrics deal with religious themes more often than some of her peers.
