YĪN YĪN
Outline
YĪN YĪN (or more commonly, Yin Yin) is a four-piece band based in Maastricht, The Netherlands, that plays instrumental music that turns to the western influenced Thai pop of the '70s that grew out of the version of the global cross-pollination that was taking place at the time. They also extend their range into other East and Southeast Asian musical traditions, including the use of the Chinese instrument guzheng. The sound they plug these elements into is a combination of surf rock paired with the somewhat darker feel of western guitars, a dash of occasional West African music, plus a fair amount of psychedelia with a hint of krautrock. They have been turning up their funk in their recent work with a clear hat tip towards the classic disco sound as well.
