Wunderhorse

Having started with Dead Pretties, a band known for the depth of its punk angst, the direction that singer-songwriter Jacob Slater took with his next outfit, Wunderhorse, was somewhat surprising. Their debut album, 2022's Club, is a mature and earnest mixture of '90s alt-rock with some Americana and a little bit of heartland rock peppered in. There are even instances where the band seems to be flirting with some classic prog ideas. Slater's songwriting chops, emotional honesty, and proper hook placement are key assets of their music. His voice comes with a slightly grainy texture that lends more weight to the songs, which tend to have an earthy feel.
