TEKE::TEKE (stylized in all caps, and referencing the Japanese urban legend, Teke-Teke) is an indie rock band based in Montreal that took Japanese guitarist Takeshi Terauchi's surf rock influenced music as a starting point and developed that sound into a half prog, half psychedelic post-rock melange with a Japanese folk flavor. They can be seen as a part of a growing trend in which western musicians enamored with the kind of western-influenced hybrid music that emerged in a non-western society and stream it back into the indie music fold (see Dengue Fever as an early instance, and also Altın Gün, Khruangbin, etc). TEKE::TEKE dives into a well that is as deep as it is broad: they have guitars with the rich tremolo (from Terauchi's music), complemented with Japanese melodies on shinobue, occasional punk beats, ambient and expansive sounds with epic prog-like scope. The music is dynamic and layered, and it is executed with imagination and precision.
