Ought

Ought was an indie band from Montreal that disbanded in 2021., They had fully embraced the legacy of post-punk with earlier work that was transparently aligned with a more conventional approach where singer Tim Darch was practically channelling the legendary Mark E. Smith (of The Fall), minus the latter's abundant bile, and with instrumentation that was aggressively angular with the kind of repetition that would make The Fall proud. On their third album, Room Inside the World (2018), Ought turned a page. The angularity began to dissipate as the band started to drift closer to more recognizably indie rock type grooves, leading to music that was still slightly off kilter but a more mature version of post-punk. On the other hand, Darch was sporting vocals that brought to mind Scott Walker's deep ethereal moaning, though without his bone-chilling creepiness.
