Preoccupations

Preoccupations are a post-punk band whose music adopts some of the basic characteristics of the genre, including rhythmic patterns set by toms and bass, and the guitars typically setting the mood and accents. The level of noise and the overall sense of menace in their music come across mostly somewhere between Bauhaus and Psychedelic Furs: they are dark but not terribly gloomy. The band has been redefining their music and expanding their horizon over the years. Having started with guitar noise at the core of their music, they have moved on to a more synth-driven sound and began to focus on the hooks while adding more variety in the rhythms of their drone. Bassist and vocalist Matt Flegel is at the heart of their music, as his bass line is paired with drummer Mike Wallace's exact beats, while his towering, booming voice delivers the emotional timbre of the songs.
