King Hannah is the indie rock duo Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle whose songs tend to be slow burning, moody indie pieces that can go from small and intimate to expansive post-rock type wide screen sound with a sharp edge. There is a well-constructed dynamic that plays out between the band members in their music where Merrick brings the melodic, guitar strumming, slightly aloof quasi-folk piece, while Whittle builds up the tension with his quietly screaming guitar work that is a mixture of scaled back shoegaze and grimy slow blues riffs (think early years of The Kills). The combination works really well. Between that and Merrick's smoky, hesitant voice, the duo accesses the kind of quiet passion that artists like Chelsea Wolfe made central to their sound, though their version evokes more melancholy than darkness.
