King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are a musical chameleon of a band from Melbourne, comprised of six multi-instrumentalists who started playing together because they liked to jam, which is apparent in their free-flowing style. They are mostly a psychedelic microtonal prog metal band, though not all at the same time or in that order. Their genre-hopping also includes occasional steps into the world of blues, pop, and psychedelic jazz. They clearly have an appetite for exploration, and their versatility and productivity is at the level of Oh Sees and Ty Segall. Their music has its fair share of hooks, some of them infectious, but their execution is what really stands out: the interplay between the instruments, their layered themes and free excursions into the world of microtones, especially the way they play around with some Middle Eastern/Turkish musical traditions with relish. Also ... a killer band name if there ever was one.
