Japanese Breakfast is the name singer-songwriter Michelle Zauner uses for her solo work (outside of the now defunct Little Big League). Her music combines pop and electronic drone with an esthetic that seems grounded in various streams of pop in the '80s, especially with respect to her instrumental stylings. There are some shoegaze and dream pop elements ingrained in her music, though she tends to downplay those and keep them mostly as background flourish. Her songs are often fairly personal. Her first self-released batch of music was lo-fi recordings she made back in Eugene, Oregon. This led to her first major release, 2016's Psychopomp, which is pretty much her journal in dealing with a highly personal loss. Her music has a good melodic sense, and it is the kind of pop that does not scream "catchy tunes", but stays with the audience more as a state of mind.
