Lala Lala

Lala Lala is the project of Lillie West, a Chicago-based artist whose music is tilted towards a kind of dream pop that has relatively bleak tones though she has been going through some stylistic changes across her albums so she is a bit of a moving target in that sense. Her earlier work was more on the lo-fi side, where her first album, Sleepyhead (2016) was dominated by a garage punk meets noise rock type of sound. She began to push rhythmic elements to the front in her more recent work, and added some electronic shadings around the songs. Backed by sharp instrumentation and clear melodies, her songs convey a sense of vulnerability and uncertainty, as she sings them with a whispery voice that is also somewhat hazy, which adds to the dreamy feel of her music. Her 2024 album if i were a real man... is a collection of instrumental ambient pieces and abstract recordings.
