Horse Lords plays an experimental brand of rock and post-rock that draws a great deal from the classic krautrock sound (see Can, Neu!) in terms of the motorik beat coupled with electronic instrumentation. They often match that against West African guitar riffs and polyrhythms, plus particular tonalities that would have otherwise made their music jarring to some extent, except that the hypnotic effect of the beat, its subtle adjustments throughout a given song, and the sense of repetition make it far more accessible than one might imagine. They also use microtonal music quite a bit, which adds more intrigue to their sound. Their pieces are instrumental and they are grounded in strong grooves. They also tend to have longer run times and an improvisational feel.
