Moin is a band formed by the multi-instrumentalist duo Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead, aka Raime, joined by drummer Valentina Magaletti. Their music draws from some of the classic post-rock bands of the '90s such as Unwound, Shellac, and Slint in the way they create tension through repetition without resolving it with some cathartic release at the end. Instead they build on that repetition as their base, and add layers on top whether rhythmic, melodic, or atmospheric. The synths operate mostly in the background, which is uncharacteristic for Raime. The music is driven mostly by a fuzzy and piercing guitar tone and a bass that hammers the groove. The drums are perhaps the real standout though, as Magaletti brings her powerful and intricate open ended rolling beats that apparently jolt Andrews and Halstead out of their usual dark ambient mode and into a far more dynamic, albeit just as gloomy, sound.
