Ed Schrader's Music Beat is a duo with Ed Schrader on drums and vocals, and Devlin Rice on bass. They typically have two gears: the frenetic garage punk gear where they furiously race through songs as if their lives depended on reaching the finish line first, and the slowburn gear where they slow it down and let Schrader croon somewhere between David Bowie and Ian Curtis (of Joy Division). Every now and then they find that middle gear where they sound like a hidden post-punk gem band rooted in the musical mindset of '79 and '80, the early days of the genre. Their garage punk is intended more in the spirit of fun and art than righteous anger. And that's the surprising part: although Schrader also works as a comedian, their songs are strictly well-written, well-performed, melodically inventive songs that stand on their own no matter what mode they are in.
