Daniel Villarreal
Outline
Daniel Villarreal-Carrillo is a drummer and producer active in the Chicago area, who plays Latin and fusion infused jazz that is very much a part of the city's complex and distinctive jazz landscape. Originally from Panama City, he casts a stylistically wide net in his approach, where things like psychedelia, Afrobeat, soul, and funk are just as likely to find their way into his music as is cumbia. He plays with subtlety and precision, as one would expect from any drummer of his stature, but also with a lot of warmth and looseness that gives way to comfortable grooves that often feel like a cozy blanket in the way they wrap the listener.
He is a member of multiple bands, including Dos Santos, Valebol, and Ida y Vuelta.
In the past, he also played with Mucca Pazza and Wild Belle in a supportive role.
He connected with artists like Jeff Parker, Anna Butterss, Bardo Martinez (Chicano Batman) and Aquies Navarro (Irreversible Entanglements) on his 2022 album Panamá 77, and with Butterss and Parker on 2023's Lados B.
