Cat Power

Cat Power (actually, Chan Marshall) is an indie artist, a singer/songwriter who has been putting out albums since 1995. Originally, she had a mostly a lo-fi, New York underground type sound, but then she took a stylistic sharp turn in 1998 and started to move into a more folk and blues oriented territory and her rock started gravitating towards a more traditional, roots-adjacent style. She is not a prolific artist, and there is usually a lifetime's backlog of events unfolding between her albums that find their way into her work, which in turn, impacts her songs tonally and thematically. This was the case when she gained a more upbeat zip in her 2012 album Sun, and then slowed down, adopting a melancholic mood in 2018's follow-up, Wanderer. Her music is never quite fully pop or overtly melodic, and her lyrics are often an honest dissection of what is going on with her life at the time.
