Blvck Hippie is a Memphis based band led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Josh Shaw, who approaches indie rock from a somewhat midwest emo angle. Their guitar frequently has the chiming reverb of the Disintegration period Robert Smith (of The Cure). The comparison is also not too far off with respect to the way their songs maintain a brooding overall tone without being complete downers and despite the fact that they are often uptempo pieces. The layer of sadness in their music cast against Shaw's casual delivery makes their work even more emotionally engaging in a way. The songwriting is crisp and sophisticated while the rhythm section comprised of Tyler Marberry on bass and Casey Rittinger on drums keeps it sharp and punchy.
