Sweet Pill is an indie band that works in the midwest emo style, complete with its math rock flourishes and its loud/soft structure. Their music is strongly infused with emo esthetics especially in terms of their melodic flow. Their punch has a bit of a pop punk touch. The guitars are deft on the arpeggio parts and the band handles the shifts in the music smoothly. Vocalist Zayna Youssef has the frantic shouty style of the genre down cold. Every now and then her voice dips into Amanda Palmer waters. When they take it down as notch or two, the band can get softer and more sentimental. Their songs thematically revolve around the emotional anxieties and frustrations that play out at a personal level.
