Bess Atwell is a singer-songwriter and a folk artist whose often toned-down, wistful songs have an understated melodic flow and a deeply romantic streak. She often sings like she is performing in small, intimate spaces in hushed tones. She generally stays in the low to mid-tempo range with her sparse instrumentation that allows her misty voice to take the lead and project a sense of vulnerability. Her songs are lyrical in nature and tend to be fairly personal to the extent that they may have been pages ripped off of her private diary at times. There is a bit of an Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief) vibe to her work, especially in terms of the subtle and gentle feel of her delivery and the way she mixes fragility with a quiet strength.
