Backhand (the Salt Lake City based one) is a band that plays a mixture of garage punk and old school punk that falls somewhere between hard driving bangers and exuberant indie rock pieces, with unexpected jazzy moments and/or some horn action to switch things up a bit and add some texture. It is the kind of punk that is built around a sense of fun and boisterousness instead of anger. There are also some early post-punk motifs of the Gang of Four or Wire variety that permeate their sound, which ban be pretty front and center at times. Their music is big and energetic, and the band plays as a tight ensemble with a sense of directness. They have a clear knack for constructing compelling melodies and solid hooks.
