White Hills

White Hills are guitarist Dave W and bassist Ego Sensation, a NYC based prolific duo that went from cosmic-tinged psychedelic rock to harsher, clangier industrial style in an abrupt leap. The first decade of the band was their guitar-based, jam-oriented heavy psych years, where they sounded like a hybrid between pre-Meddle period Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath on overdrive. This is captured on their 2022 release The Revenge of Heads on Fire, which revisits some of their work in this period. All that changed on 2015's Walks for Motorists, which saw the band take a turn towards industrial noise and primal beats in the Einstürzende Neubauten ballpark that continues to this day. Synths and electronic effects play a more central role in their music, which has a darker, dystopian flavor. It is a captivating sound, to be sure, one that is hard to turn away from.
