Melbourne based singer-songwriter Vance Joy plays a mixture of indie folk and indie pop with a relaxed and spacious approach that may bring to mind bands like Lord Huron and perhaps more often, The Lumineers. His 2014 debut album Dream Your Life Away spends more time in the folk territory, but the wide screen feel was present in his music as early as his breakout single "Riptide". There are also shades of Ed Sheeran in there, especially in his melodic flow. He sings in a clear and sweet voice as he delivers songs that are personal, thoroughly romantic, and clearly heartfelt. Some of that is due to his lyrics and knack for storytelling, for sure, but a good chunk of the credit has to go to the way his presence projects earnestness and care-free charm.
